Getting ready to re jet
10/16/10 at 09:14:17
Hi everyone. New guy here. Getting ready to hang a Sportster muffler, cone air filter and re jet my 09 S40. I've already removed the pilot screw plug, I'm going to start with removing 1/2 of the needle spacer. I picked up a 152.5 and a 155 main jet. With the above mods, would a 155 be a better place to start. I don't care much about mileage, I'm a big guy and I'm looking for better mid to top end and stopping the backfiring!

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

Are you just shooting in the dark, or do you have evidence you need to rejet ? Not taking away from the tuning experts here, but even they would have a hard time telling what your bike actually needs for jetting. It depends on your bike first of all, then altitude, and several other things determine what you need.
I did a spacer mod only, because thats all it needed, (to correct low speed surge) and.....just for info, that did not change the backfiring one bit.
Changing to a less restrictive filter is no reason to rejet,......unless you do a lot of WOT, because that is the only throttle range where it will make any difference....if there. Even a modified exhaust will only make a difference at higher speeds,....and is not a reason in itself to rejet.
I know, others have different opinions about this kinda stuff.

It's quite easy actually, just a few simple rules to follow.
Look at your plug, WOT test on a hill, starting, shutdown, accel, steady running at various speeds, and mpg.
You get the 1st 3 right, the rest will be icing.
