Oil leak from valve cover stud
10/15/10 at 13:37:22

I've got an oil leak coming up from around one of the valve cover studs. From looking @ the back right of the engine, I can see about an inch of this stud exposed between the valve cover and the top of the block, and the oil comes up from the bottom of the stud. Did I miss something putting this back together? Should there be something there to seal around that stud?

no, it's definitely seeping up. I'm clearly watching it come up from the bottom of the stud.

could it be leaking from that head plug cap and then making it's way to that stud somehow? I definitely know I RTV'd that cap in, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not leaking.

to borrow a pic from stimpy...

upper half of the pic shows the head looking from in front, so left is right, top is back.  See the head plug on the bottom?  Oriented now?

so right rear bolt is on the upper left.  guess what that is?  that's your oil supply line to the head.  did you put a sealing washer there?  that  bolt corresponds to L130* in the pic below. the * means there should be a gasket there.

I'm following. Thanks. I'll take a look and see tomorrow. It must have fallen out when I took the valve cover off last. It was previously leaking from the left side of the cover due to the RTV not doing it's job. I guess when I fixed that, I lost that gasket. Would that be something in the full gasket kit I bought from bikebandit?

only 1 o'ring captured between the head cover (that's what we call it) and the head.
Becareful around here, too much rtv and you close up an important hole.
that's the o'rings job, to keep rtv out of it.  And there's no way to inspect to see if the hole is blocked.  other then leave a valve inspection cover off and get sprayed with oil.

I definitely made sure not to impede that one o-ring.

So upon further investigating, it wasn't a valve cover bolt where it was leaking, it's the back right head bolt. I know the head gasket is brand new, so I'm @ a loss for what's going on here. I've torn this engine apart 6 times now, and each time it's something else going wrong.
