If Im riding the pants off it, Im not looking at the speedo when I shift. I run it in a gear till I feel the acceleration fading, then I grab another gear. I always find myself in 5th before Im ready to stop grabbing gears.

I don't go that far thinking about it... sorry. Usually I upshift quickly, keeping rpm in diesel tractor range! Can't help it, sounds so gooood!

I shift when the engine starts sounding a bit rough. I like hearing the low *put-put* noise. But I'm new at this.

I use my tach. With the engine still cold, I shift at 3,000rpm. When I get on it, I usually shift at 6,000 the latest, as it is pointless to squeeze it to 6,500 red line, as it doesn't like that very much. You accelerate quicker if you shift at 6,000 and then crack it open again.

My bike is set up to accelerate best from about 50-75, so I usually short shift or shift a little early. And no, my Savage doesn't drag race like it did when I got it. I like the idea of rolling on in 5th to get out of trouble or riding twisty roads in 4th. But that's just me. I think I usually hit 5th gear around 55-60. I think some here go all the way to 70 when riding hard.

First to second 10 mph, second to third 30 mph, third to fourth 45-55 mph, fourth to fifth on the highway 60 mph. I try not to run the engine over 5500 rpm unless I feel like wicking it. The engine in it's stock setup really doesn't have a lot of ba11s in the higher rpm range if I remember right.
