Bike went POP...then no power!???

bike went POP...no power ???
Today at 14:49:25      HI, was on way home from a 6 day-800 mile trip all up thru northern Pa & NY. Stopped to gas up in Leighton PA just before turnpike on way home. I turned on the key..turned on the on switch...hit the starter button & heard a POP way louder than a backfire. Then had no power at all!!  Had help from a very nice stranger, who is now my friend. What we figured out is that when the key is turned on, the system is ground out. We found the fuses...2 20 amp & they are fine. I called my local dealer/service guys ..Bromelys in Trevose for some help, but they had no help to offer. So she came home in the back of a truck.  Is this a common problem & any help would be appreciated.  I put over 20,000miles on my bike in the past 4 yrs & have kept in excellent condition & am baffled here!!  Thanks!

I think this one requires the back to basics approach...
Check for spark...
Check for fuel...
Check for compression...
Follow the trail from there...

Sounds like something that had happened to me once. Check to see if the drive belt had rubbed any wires stripping the insulation. That was my problem.

Lights, smoke, no action?

Lights on?  then the battery and wiring is still good.
Check brake, signals and gage lights.

Fuses good, double check, sometimes they blow off to the side and may look good unless you look real close.

Does the pop repeat?  or is a one time thing?

I think you'll find it in the starter circuit.  I don't like the way every thing is pinched in with the airbox.  Could even be the starter.

I'd take the tank and seat off and give everything a close inspection.  Look for overheated insulation.

I started at the basics....I am checking all the wires now. I removed covers around the belt & don't see any wires.  It has to be a wire that is bare because battery gets 12volts till I turn key on, then none.  The key was left in the bike in the on position in ride home in back of truck, so is now dead & I have to remove to charge it.   Then back to suare one.   thanks

No lights....even tried to push start. No power at all!  Took seats, side covers off, found the fuses which are good.

I think you have a short.  a major short.
A short so big when made goes pow to rival a savage backfire.
check the power lead to the starter.
If you have an ohm meter, remove the lead to the starter and check for a short.  Then check the starter, only it's supposed to be low ohmage so check clymers as to what it should be.

and the older I get the more better I am at missing things. Grin

Actually, i was still back at the pow - then nothing step.   The natural thing to do then is crank the starter, wearing down the battery that little bit.

HAha  It was gas...After the POP...no power..no lights, signals , nothing. Was very strange. A nice guy had many tools & my battery had full charge, with key off,  but nothing registered when key was turned on. Was no option to wear out the battery, wouldn't even push start. I am getting a new starter in it tomorrow, hopefully that is the problem.  Am crossing fingers!!  Still lots of riding to do!!

You can have new brushes put in starters.

Get your battery tested. The starter will not cause a no lights no power situtation. Even if the starter is bad, you should have lights, horn, etc. and a LOUD click from the starter solenoid.

No power to anythiing Is a BAD battery OR cable connections. A battery can show a full charge & not be able supply the Amps to even power the lights.

Get the battery tested & check your cables at both ends for corrosion. Cool

Some riders trigger intentional backfires by flicking the kill-button off for a second, then putting it back on...
"Kaa-pow!"...
The extra loud pop you heard, could be a similar thing...
... a wire somewhere shorted, killing the spark, and building up some excess fuel in the exhaust pipe, and "Kap-pow!"...

Just saying that the noise may be just a symptom, and not anything broken or damaged...
... a simple electrical short could cause it... Wink...
