Front tire loses air...
10/07/10 at 16:40:53

So, I'm guessing I picked up a tack or something. How hard is it to set a tube? I've read some horror stories on it... Also, if I change it on my own, I lack a jack. Any successes, caution or advice on lifting one of these babies up on a blanketed-cinder block?

Thanks all...

First,.. pump it up and put a dab of spit on the valve stem (remove cap first)...
If it's not leaking there, I usually just pull the wheel and have the shop do it..

No jack?... Put it on the kickstand, stand like you're going to get on it, and pull the handlebars toward you with weight of the bike resting on the rearwheel and kickstand... when the front wheel comes up, have a friend slide a block under the engine...
It will be supported in a triangle,... of rear wheel, kickstand, and frame... with the front wheel an inch or two off the ground...
(Might want to loosen the front axle first...)

Be sure to put something in place of the rotor between the caliper. Or at least put a HUGE sign on it so no one will squeeze the front brake and squirt the caliper out on the floor.

Spat on the stem and got some slow but confident bubbles between the nut around the valve and the rim. Is that just where the air's coming out?or oughtn't I to try tightnin' that b€€€€?

Bill, I think he said the air is coming from around the stem body which means it's also leaking inside the tire casing. That's what I understood?

NEVER EVER USE A PETROLEUM PRODUCT LIKE WD-40 ON RUBBER PRODUCTS LIKE TIRES OR TUBES!!  Petroleum products deteriorate rubber products. If you must try a lubricant use a silicone spray.

Bad advice, Bill67.

If youve got air coming out between the stem & rim, its done. Get a tube ordered, or whatever, IF that tire isnt in REAL good shap[e AND you choose to not replace it, youll spend a lot of $$ on a crap tire.

Yes, if it's not coming out of the valve, but down at the nut,... you have a puncture...

If the tube is older than 6 months,  I would probably buy a new one rather than patch...  Old rubber gets tired and looses it's stretch, so it's more likely to set-up twisted in the tire upon re-inflation, creating pinches or weak spots.........

Some of the tubes Ive seen just dont Feel like theyre a good rubber. They kinda feel like PVC or somethin,, not at all like the truck tire inner tubes we used to pull behind the boat.

Make sure you determine what caused the original problem and fix that as well otherwise you are likely to be leaking air again in short order. Get it fixed asap. You don't want to have a tire go down on you while you are riding.

You can pick up a new tube at any HD shop in the world, same price as from the metric shop, but normally Dunlop (better quality rubber).

If you have an IRC tire on it, swap it for something decent. Decent meaning not made in Taiwan or China.

Pull and replace the rim liner if it looks like the spoke ends have even remotely cut in to the band.

FWIW, straight rib front tires look stellar on Savages...

Straight groove tires follow the grooves in the road.
