My grandfather was a dispatch rider during WWI. You had to supply your own bike, and he chose an Enfield.

was your grandfather in the British Army ?
I have never heard of anyone in the royal signal corp buying there own bike, they did have BSAs and Enfields,and a few Nortons,I think you mean they had a choice, the whole Royal Signal Corp was made up of messingers ,could hardly be expected to buy your own bike.
I'm not trying to argue ,but I think you are mistaken.
Could have been worse ,in the navy did they get a bunch of guys to make up a crew,then have em all chip in for a ship ?
