Motorcycle Trickle Charger
09/28/10 at 12:34:46

I recently bought, at a yard sale, very cheap in a ziplock bag, a motorcycle trickle charger.  I know that is what it is because it said so on the bag! Wink  I thought I could find a manuel or something on line, but no luck.  I thought I would ask my questions here and I am sure someone can help me.

It is a transformer that plugs directly into the wall, maybe seven foot of cord with a two inch square black box and then eight inches of pigtail coming out.  It has a connector, like two barrel connectors fixed togther, one black one red.  Black is negative, red is positive (checked with my meter).

On the front of the transformer it says the following:
MRC
MRC TECHNOLOGY INC
MODEL: 48C-2
AC ADAPTER
CLASS 2 TRANSFORMER
INPUT: 120V 60 Hz 18W
OUTPUT: 16VAC 600mA
MADE IN TAIWAN

It is also UL listed.

I checked it and it does put out the 16 volts, like it said.  I searched for MRC. etc and found nothing like this, somewhere I did find a different model number.  I contacted the company and have not heard anything back.

I just want to make sure this is what I think it is and that it will keep my battery charged while not frying something important.

Thanks for any help
Mike

...yea, as soon as I read MRC I thought, good motors but Aeroflight had better chargers Cheesy Walmart has a very good charger by Schumacher for about $20. Put your  MRC charger away unless you've got an R/C motorcycle, which by the way I did have but that's another story.

Buy a regular motorcycle type tickle charger with the circuit that won't overcharge your batt.  It will cost about 20 and change but you will have piece of mind and a well cared for battery.
Or just ride all winter like I do.

If it really does put out 16 volts while connected to a full charged 12v battery, don't leave it connected, because it will boil the battery dry in a month or less. 16 volts @ 600 ma output is probably used for fast charging a very small battery.

A maintainer-float type charger for any regular lead acid battery will read a max voltage of 13.4 after the battery is fully charged.
Any charger that has higher than 13.4 voltage, should not be left connected all the time, especially in warm-hot weather.
For this and more info like it, google on,....."12v side of life"

And yes, that Shumacher charger at WM-Sears-and some Auto parts is a very good float charger that can be left connected all the time.

Thanks for the info guys.  I actually bought two of the chargers for $1, so it is not like I am out a whole lot.  I just wanted to make sure of what I was doing before I did it.  Which seems to be a very good thing in this case.

I have never had a problem with my battery, I ride enough in the winter (and summer) to keep the batter charged, this was just going to be another toy.  Can't have too many of them!  So, I will throw them in my five gallon bucket of transformers, that I am saving for future use, unless someone else wants them.  (I can let them go cheap, I don't have much in them!)

If it puts out 16 volts, you could make your own colloidal silver.

The part that bothers me is where it says AC. AC is Alternating Current and is not suitable for charging a battery at all.

Yep, Routy, I make my share of typos and other mistakes, but not this time.  I went back and looked and it is just what I typed

OUTPUT: 16VAC 600mA

So, again I will ask, What do I have?  What can I do with it?  Hummm Huh

I am glad I could give you guys a head scratcher! Wink

I tried Google out.

MRC
MRC TECHNOLOGY INC
MODEL: 48C-2
AC ADAPTER
CLASS 2 TRANSFORMER
INPUT: 120V 60 Hz 18W
OUTPUT: 16VAC 600mA

Only MRC I could find was a water treatment kinda outfit. Popped 48c-2 into their search window & got Nuthin..
