Vaccum hose
09/26/10 at 16:28:09

Hi Guys
Would anyone have any idea as to why the old savage runs better with the carb vaccum hose pulled? When the hose is on and the petcock is on run or reserve she bogs down and stalls. If I leave the line off and petcock to "prime" she runs perfect unless I plug the vac nipple. It's like she's starving for air. I put some sea foam in and since then the troubles have started. I put it in the crank case and the fuel tank. Thoughts?  Questioning

Thanks

Andy

She's running rich, but you knew that.
Undo the white spacer mod and see what happens.
How's the air filter?

Hi Verslagen1

I havent checked yet to see if the white spacer mod has been done, but I have a good feeling it has been. The only way I can get her to run without a lot of black smoke huffing out is with the mixture screw all the way in (CW). If the mod has been done and the spacer is gone (which is what I am thinking) or filed down how can I fix it? I read somewhere about using washers to push the needle back down.

Thanks

Andy

1st step is to open it up and see what you do have.

Now that you've said the mixture screw is in all the way, you probably were rejetted by someone who didn't have a clue.  I'd open it up, find what jets you have, see what white spacer you got, and go from there.  Hard to tell you how to go from point A to point B if you don't know where point A is.  This may take you an afternoon, cause of all the carp you got to pull off, but I think it'll be worth it.  Then if it's been rejetted you can ask lancer for a custom set of jets.

they use #4 (.114" diameter) washers  which will equivalent to 3mm (.118")  if they also have 2.5mm, I'd get 3 of each and see which one works better.  Don't know what your Canadian hardware stores carry.

I have had the carb apart to clean. I could get the main jet out but not the pilot. It appears to be stripped out on the top. I bought the bike about a month ago and am thinking I was sold a "parts" bike. The guy I bought it from had another Savage and a spare engine there. I think he used all the "good" parts to fix his wife's bike and then sold me the leftovers!! First thing I noticed was that the floats were crushed. I fixed them by drilling a hole in them, shooting compressed air in and then soldering over the holes. It's really starting to annoy me. One day the bike runs fine the next its flooding and fouling plugs. I ran it for 30 mins idleing away in the driveway yesterday, then out of nowhere it starts blowing gas out the vent lines. I guess the sea foam cleaned her out enough for everything to open up fully. Angry

Yikes, I'd take apart the carb, inspect and clean throughly.  Or get another.  Crushed floats?  unless carp like this is disclosed, sounds like fraud to me.

...the site censor used to edit it to "pethingy",.... now, that's a funny word...
...and it sounds way dirtier... Huh...

... and newbies would always ask,... "Where's my pethingy?... and, "What does my pethingy do?...

Hi Guys
I noticed in the "test your petcock" write-up that the mixture screw is further in in that picture than mine is. Could this be an issue I am having? Mine basically only goes "flush"  or a little beyond with the surrounding housing then it gets tight  Huh

OK......so no white spacer mod has been done, I pulled the filter and she still seams like she's starving for air. I pull the vac line and put her on prime and she runs no problem. put the vac line back or plug with my finger and she starts to idle rough then stalls!! Angry Any ideas? Sad

Thanks

If pulling the air filter doesn't fix it,.. you can't be starving for air... You are getting too much gas...
Pulling the vac line, and not capping it, is making an intentional intake air leak... it must be compensating for too much gas...

Check your needle and seat in the floatbowl,... make sure your floats, actually float..... and make sure your main jet is secure, and has the brass washer under it...
... also make sure that the butterfly valve is secure on the shaft...
... and... that the needle jet slide is moving freely...
