Advice on swaping front forks/triple tree? (Read 125 times)

Does anyone have any advice on an "easy" way to swap out the front shocks and triple? I'm open for suggestions... Thanks! I'll post some pics.

a car jack and a piece of wood will keep the front end up enough to do a little work on it. best tie the bike down to something so it doesn't topple over though.

never removed the forks or triple, so i can't advise on that. mighty curious about it though.

are you changing the front end for newer stock parts or changing to something else entirely? i've had thoughts of putting a different front end on my savage, but the process stopped there Sad

From my experience, not hard to do.

I'd take the time to drain the oil out of the new forks before you put them in and replace with new. Take the top cap off, remove the spacer and spring and turn upside down. Work the slider up and down to push all the oil out.

Grease the stem bearings, remove any crap on the races. Scotchbrite if there's any corrosion.

Put everything back together loosely, tighten the axle then the caps, then adjust the stem nut and then the pinch bolts. Tight axle aligns the sliders, tight caps aligns the tubes.

Thanks for the help. All I'm doing is putting newer stock parts on. I'm not redoing the front end with after-market stuff.

Verslagen - why drain the oil? The new forks I have seem to be in great shape. I was hoping to just be able to take the Top Cap off and slide into place. However, I'm definitely open for your opinion on the oil removal. Thanks again.

As easy as it is to do now, I'd do it for anything older than a couple of years old. But knowing what's in there and how much is gold.

Reply #5 - 09/22/10 at 05:22:47 I would change the oil.You are actually supposed to do that every so often.Plus you'll be suprised how silver that oil will look(metal shavings).For under 20 bucks it's piece of mind.

Reply #6 - 09/22/10 at 08:26:49 No way would I put forks on w/o changing the oil. While theyre off & in your hands, its easy. Give you a chance to measure the oil in each fork tube. Youll know then if one might have a leaky seal, before you get them installed.
