45,000 miles
09/09/10 at 01:40:43

I'm one of those people who just is not lucky. Everything I buy falls apart or breaks or someone steals it! (my 2 Harleys). Not so with my 02 Savage. I cannot break it! If and when I do, I want to by a S50. That does not look like its gonna happen for a while!
I bought it brand new and have put all the miles on it myself. It still looks like it rolled off the show room floor. Actually a lot better. I take pretty good care of it. Every winter I strip it down to engine and frame and clean and put everything back together. Make sure everything is tight. I have ridden thru 11 or 12 states on it and it just passed the 45,000 mile mark. As yet I have still not had one repair. I have changed tires and oil and brakes is all. I never took it in for its first service cause its a waste of money. Greg D adjusted the valves at 15,000 miles and they were still right on. I also changed the front brakes for the first time at 15,000 and the rear at 22,000. Greg changed my cam chain altho it really did not need it at 33,000 miles.
I use regular auto oil (20-50). I prefer Castrol but sometimes I use the real cheap stuff. I have never had a oil leak of any kind. Which is odd since most of my riding seems to be on freeways and I'm always running at a high RPM. 700 miles in one day at freeway speeds and you would think this little bike would come apart. Not so!  I really wanted the S50 this winter but I can't buy it until my savage finally dies. Unfortunately its running as good as the day I bought it and has not given me one clue when its demise might happen, if ever. I ride it like its a touring motorcycle and have put up to 7,000 miles on it in a one month trip! It just keeps going and going! Kinda like my post here but I can't help it! What a great bike! None of my riding buddies have had half the good luck with their bikes as I have had with my Savage.

Say "fortunately" instead of "unfortunately". You should sale the thumper and buy the S50 you want so much.

I hope mine runs forever, or at least until I get tired of it too, maybe once I run out of mods...

The miles you put on your Savage without problems is certainly commendable. It's a testament to the engineering and manufacturing  expertise by Suzuki. However, if you really want a S50, sell the Savage and ride the bike you want. Life is too short.

67,000 miles
sorta faithful oil changes.  Was on Mobil1 for a long time.  Trying Rotella T6 that last 2 changes (just changed oil today).
No "major" problems.  Never touched the valves. 2 mufflers.  Verslavy II, but still on original cam chain. Busted a few pieces mostly from treating it like a dirt bike.  (Just replaced front bearings).  Hmmm.. nothing else comes to mind.
Tough and faithful ride.  Always got me home!

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Suzuki engineers have figured out some sort of good metallurgy or have good dimensional tolerance holding in their factories. I had a 1992 DR 350 dualsport that I put 30,000 miles on....30,000 miles of terror....long, slow trailrides with not much airflow, several 300 mile highway trips, running 6000 rpm for hours at a time. all i did was change oil every 2000 miles, check and adjust valves every 3000.
Right now I have a 97 DR 350 dualsport with 15,000....5,000 or so of which are as a bigbore 435cc. only problem was the counterbalancer going out of time with the crank and hitting the big end of the crank, putting a smile in the crank and chunking open the case. common failure on post 1994 DRs. preparing to buy an 09 S40 from a local dealer, not sure if the same problem exists w/ this motor, but from what i know I expect this bugger to last me well into my senior years!

Other than the annoying oil leak, ended at the hands of a Suzuki certified mechanic, my '05 S40 has been flawless, fun, and able to do everything a motorcycle needs to do.
