Hey all, I just had to share this...

I got working on the engine from my project. The person I purchased from said that the starter and the gears were not with the engine. I thought, OK no problem, should be no problem to get ahold of another set. Welp, I opened the stator cover and guess what, no starter gears but the infamous kickback broke off the reducer gear and took the crank case with it. The genious attempted to fix with JB weld. See the pictures. Oh, yea by the way, the bolt holding the crank halves togethe is behind that 1/2" smear of JB and I had to pick it all out to get it out. I found 3 teeth from the starter gears and a whole bunch of aluminum in the bottom of the case. Miraculiously nothing was marred, scraped, gouged and everything was in tolerance.

I agree, he should have disclosed the extent.

Just got a case in. Getting all parts off the old one and into the new. So far, no issues. It looks like it also had the head plug leak. Looking at the speedo from the engine, it only had ~7000 miles on it, not bad for an '86. Still lots of compression, chain is still good, rings and all gears... Will keep updates coming as I go.

Appreciate all the help everone has given so far; great site.

So if you have a 4 speed you can upgrade it to the anti kick back gear from a 5 speed.
find yourself the torque limiter gear, the idle gear and the stator cover off a '95 or later and it's a direct swap out.

Now bear in mind that I installed this in a non-operating '88.
I didn't bolt it down and I didn't install the starter. But the idle gear is the same diameter, just thicker, so should engage with the starter just fine. And with the gears installed, and cover in place, I was able to reach in and check side to side play. And it should be fine.

The sole reason to bypass a 4 speed is now gone with the dodo bird.

Com'n and lite'm up. I want to hear that shutdown twang from here to Timbuktu
