Opened Engine, I guess JB Weld doesn't hold up
08/31/10 at 19:23:12

Hey all, I just had to share this...

I got working on the engine from my project. The person I purchased from said that the starter and the gears were not with the engine. I thought, OK no problem, should be no problem to get ahold of another set. Welp, I opened the stator cover and guess what, no starter gears but the infamous kickback broke off the reducer gear and took the crank case with it. The genious attempted to fix with JB weld. See the pictures. Oh, yea by the way, the bolt  holding the crank halves togethe is behind that 1/2" smear of JB and I had to pick it all out to get it out. I found 3 teeth from the starter gears and a whole bunch of aluminum in the bottom of the case. Miraculiously nothing was marred, scraped, gouged and everything was in tolerance.

In the past, JB Weld has been noted for softening over time inside our engines.

I think you could easily have his butt for selling something like that & not telling you it was screwed up.

I guess I could do something but for the price I paid, I should have known what I was getting. $350 for the bike and a bunch of parts.

Pick yourself up a bottom end, marry the two together and carry on.

Even for 350, he should've told you the case was cracked.

I agree, he should have disclosed the extent.

Just got a case in. Getting all parts off the old one and into the new. So far, no issues. It looks like it also had the head plug leak. Looking at the speedo from the engine, it only had ~7000 miles on it, not bad for an '86. Still lots of compression, chain is still good, rings and all gears...  Will keep updates coming as I go.

Appreciate all the help everone has given so far; great site.

Here's a question that was pm'd me awhile back...

Hey Verslagen1,

I know you would have insite to this question...

I have an 86 engine with a newer starter clutch torque reducer (kickback) gear. Is it ok to put a newer stator cover on the older engine? The current cover I have will not accomidate the new gear because of its bulk compared to the older gear set. What are your thoughts?

Thanks, dvansyck

Sorry, I've never heard of it being done.
And I didn't know that gear could fit.
I can check when I get home, but might take some time.
Let me know what you find out.  It's a great find if it works.

Hey verslagen1,

I just went ahead and just tried something last night. I took ~1/2" off the post for the starter gear on the stator cover and drilled out the hole and it fits, the 86 stator cover, stator ring and starter gear with a newer (96 on) kickback gear!!! I was going to put a post in the tech section if you think this will be a desired modification to the earlier bikes.

Let me know what you think, Dan

So here's the answer Danny boy...

YES!   Smiley Smiley Smiley

So if you have a 4 speed you can upgrade it to the anti kick back gear from a 5 speed.
find yourself the torque limiter gear, the idle gear and the stator cover off a '95 or later and it's a direct swap out.

Now bear in mind that I installed this in a non-operating '88.
I didn't bolt it down and I didn't install the starter.  But the idle gear is the same diameter, just thicker, so should engage with the starter just fine.  And with the gears installed, and cover in place, I was able to reach in and check side to side play.  And it should be fine.

The sole reason to bypass a 4 speed is now gone with the dodo bird.

Com'n and lite'm up.   I want to hear that shutdown twang from here to Timbuktu
