Need New Gas Cap Options ?? Substitutions
08/19/10 at 01:50:36

Hi,  a few days ago I went to put my cap back on my tank and as soon as the key turned and the cap went in the tank the key locked up and wouldn't move.

after a couple of hours of trying to get in out I finally got the key out in one piece but the lock was toast so after another hour of trying to pry the cap off I had to resort to using a hammer to pound the lock out.

now I'm in need of a fuel cap I don't need it to be a keyed unit either just want to find one that fits any suggestions? or some mod I could make to the bike for a standard one to fit.  I don't want to have to weld in a new bung for the bike.  Thanks for any help given.

All jokes aside I actually considered that option but it has to be a vented cap so the big cork idea is out.   Does anyone know what model suzuki's use the same cap type as on the savage?

Is the cap toast or just the lock?
The cylinder pins can be removed and the lock then operated with any key.

I wouldn't mind finding a nice cap with no lock for myself...

A locking cap on a 2 gallon tank is silly... Undecided...
Who's gonna' steal yur' gas?...
...or is it to protect the cap?...
...from someone like jsarsfield?...  Angry...

The cap is fine but the entire cam assembly including the latch is gone along with a few chunks of the plastic housing.  Right now I fashioned a piece of spring steel down through the lock hole and filled that with some hot glue to keep fuel from splashing but its nowhere near sealed around the plug.

I coulda swore someone found one from a riding lawn mower that fit, but I can't seem to find it...

Edit - I think this was the thread I was thinking of, but it doesn't appear that we found anything that definitely work.  But the subject was ones with fuel gauges, so you might find something interesting here...  http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1255465000

Let us know if you find something....
