Only the obvious,
1.Switch on right handlebar to the off position.
2.footrest up when starting.
3.clutch lever not fully dissengaged.

well all the other electronics work. the lights come on, the horn and turn signals all work. i know the battery is good. i've checked the kill switch and it looks fine. when i press the start button i don't get anything. it doesn't even turn over at all, just nothing. it does randomly work every couple of days though. i can't figure it out

You do have to have the clutch lever pulled in, and the kickstand has to be in the up position...

let's go thru the numbers...
ig on
run/off to on
clutch in
set tranny to neutral or kickstand up
push the button and it should whir.

Assuming he is doing the starting drill correctly, his sporadic problem may say "contact issue" with one of his many switches.
