cam chain and tensioner

My bike is a 2005 s40 with 3k mi on it . It makes what seems to me to be a valve noise ,tho it's not bad . How can you tell without opening up the motor whether your cam chain and tensioner are ok ?It seems to run fine .I have to take to a mechanic to check ,at what mileage should I do this? Thanks

My wifes 1980 GN 400 was still good at 25,000 miles and was never checked. So I'm sure my S40 will do the same.

The noise you will hear will come from around the oil filter.
Typically a clack, clack... that you should be able to feel with your foot or hand.
But at 3k you got a long way to go.
Now supposedly, you're going to retorque the head bolts every 5000 miles.  If you were going to follow the book   Shocked  this would be a good time to check this too.  if you had a good mechanic that is.

That falls under the category of, "How lucky do you feel?"

I torque the head bolts on an average of every 3600 miles (my bike is in my signature).

Historically being unlucky in such matters, I'm certain I'd have blown at least one head gasket by now if I never torqued the head bolts.    :'(

Ive got the head cover off, gotta replace a busted cam chain guide. Ill weld another hole on the tensioner. After going this far, I think Ill leave it alone, on the head bolts & just see how it works out. IF I do anything, I might just put the torque wrench on & see if one will UNCH a bit before it hits the torque specs. I know what the book says, loosen off &retorque. I aint a gonna dewwitt...
