Cam chain tensioner longevity...
07/30/10 at 14:49:28

I'm getting the impression that the cam chain tensioner is a weak area in the design of the S40,  however this is based more on memory than research.  I've talked to a service manager who told me that I need not be concerned about the cam chain tensioner, with 15,000 miles on my S40.  I hope that he is right, but I think that I remember several postings that mentioned this as a vulnerable area on this bike.  Can you guys shed some light?  Thanks !

The cam chain tensioner does not have the travel required to fully utilize the allowed wear of the chain.

At 15k I'd check it.

BTW, your service manager is an ass.

Here's the data on the cam chain...

Its so easy to put a new one in  that  its not realy a "weak link".   But get one of the stronger chains from Lancer and the reworked adjuster found on this site.   Also The Spring doesn't have to be as strong as it is, as in "undo stress on short life compents"  Mine's only about 1/3 as strong as original , with no problems for 2500 miles now.

Its a great bike and Motor.   How long has Suzuki been making it ????  compair that to other modles ...

Get a tube of Ultra Gray Form-a-Gasket , its easer , better in use ,and cheeper than buying a new gasket

37,000 +  miles and going strong !
