Can't turn petcock without pliers

It moves so hard, I think I'm about to break off the lever. Should I get a new one?

you can rebuild the old one,...but for the same price, you can swap to the far better Raptor petcock...

This is the Raptor part no.  5LP-24500-01-00
2003 Yamaha Raptor 660 YFM660R

The shiney nameplate can be unsnaped then the lever will slide out.
put some grease on it and slide it back in.  I don't think anyone shows the whole detail, but there's a manual conversion mod that will help.

Should we really be suggesting a change out if and when the stock is working correctly ? After all, it is a saftey item, put there (if I had to guess) to prevent fire in the case of an accident, or maybe a float valve sticking while parked near a water heater etc.

My valve is hard turning too, but every time I'm outta fuel I seem to forget that it needs fixin. And ya can't fix it w/ a ful tank of gas,...can ya ? Shocked

a vacuum petcock is not a safety feature....  it is a convenience feature...
it is a danger, because it has a higher failure rate than the float needle and causes a worse fuel leak, through the vacuum line when it fails...

So, I do suggest replacement...  I've had three of these fail on three different bikes...
Look at the number of members that have problems with these pieces of crap...

In your opinion, the nanny state deems it a safety.
If you opt for a manual, you'll need a safety to remind you to turn it off.
maybe drill a hole in the lever and clip a leash to your keys.

I never said they didn't give trouble, but for the most part only in older bikes where normal deterioration over the years causes many malfunctions to take place. IMO I still believe it in a good saftey feature, and if mine ever gives trouble, I'll simply turn it to prime till I can replace the needed parts.

I've never read anything official saying that this is a safety device...

I don't see anything safe about it... it can leak as much or more than a sticky float...

Can anyone point me to an official statement saying that this is intended to make something safe?...

Ok, but do I have to drain the tank first?

yes, the lever itself can be removed and replaced.  but the plastic piece behind it is what need to be lubed.  for that you'll need to pop off the back of the petcock to push it out from the back.

I'm with Serowbot on this one. Mine is only an '06 petcock was causing problems especially in cold weather. Switched to Raptor and no problems.
In my MSF couse they told us to remember F.I.N.E b4 every ride...(Fuel, Ignition,Nuetral,Engine switch). It took some getting used to but now I always remember to shut off the fuel when I stop although sometimes I still am in a hurry and start out w/o the fuel on...doesn't take long to figure out... Wink
