My wife drove her Suzuki 1980 Suzuki GN 400 over 500 miles on a trip with out air filter and many miles after that and I could see no harm it did.Other than the fastest it would go was 75 mph with out filter 82 mph with filter.

MMkay, no harm done then, unless those 10 miles were n a sand storm.
Out of curiosity, how many would it take before there was harm?
Erm, but more immediately. If the starter fluid works, does that rule certain things out / point to something?
Pretty much
rules out compression, spark, and air supply problems.
I would suspect a fuel/carb related problem.

Too many variables to know. My dad bought a used car & was very happy with it. His job caused him to run up & down a lot of oilfield roads, very dusty/dirty. He saw the thing start using oil after about 3 or 4 weeks, & he drove a LOT of miles, generally close to 100,000 a year, he broke 100,000 one year. He took it to his mechanic & found he had no air cleaner. Sold it, took his loss,, bought another car. Pretty sure he checked the air cleaner on that one.
