Not starting...
07/13/10 at 16:49:01

I had a flat tire a couple weeks ago, and between running out to fill it up and a couple other things, I had started the bike and run it a few times with just a few minutes running in between. So I went to start it one day and nothing happened--just a slight click. The lights were dim almost to the point of being out, so I figured that the batter had been run down too far. I took it out, brought it into a local shop and had it charged, reset it and turned the key. All lights came on--yeah!

Only it still won't start. I'm new to this do-it-yourself stuff, and hope that I'm not over my head. I have the Clymer, and followed everything for reinstalling the batter. Anyway, now when I hit the starter button it just makes a bunch of clicks--pretty fast in succession--from right under the seat.

What should be my next troubleshooting step? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Extra info--it was just in for a service and checked out ok, got a new (cheap) battery. Don't know fi any of that helps...

Thanks all!

Tried that. Wiggled, completely removed and reinstalled, wiggled again. Lights all come on. Now it wheezes more than clicks...

dead battery...    again...

You may have run it down again trying to start...

Switch the petcock to prime next time...  once it starts, turn it back...

It it were me, I'd charge the battery and load test it.

Battery life seems to be all over the map these days.

If your bike is before the headlite cutout, notice it when you hit the starter, if it goes quite dim, you done load tested it and found it wanting ???  If it stays bright, I wouldn't suspect the battery
