am i missing something? (performance question)
07/01/10 at 14:05:52

ok, so my bike is almost finished, ive been riding it for about a month after having it dismantled for almost a year. i did a few performance upgrades to it while it was in pieces. my problem is, while doing the upgrades i was expecting to get an increase in my top speed, which was about 60mph before the tear down. now after installing all my new parts im averaging about 55-60mph. it feels a little punchier, louder, and it responds better, but i can barely get it up to highway speeds.

what am i missing?

here are the specs:

1987 with 20k miles
mikuni 38mm vm carb, kn cone filter
supertrapp exhaust
verslavvy tensioner
stage one performance cam
recent valve job
chain conversion.  43/17

i have a ufo and a dial a jet, but i have not added them yet. waiting till after summer to open it up again  Wink

Well, the sav ought to get 80-85 mph on the flats so if your gearing for the chain conversion isn't off, I'd say you've got duncan donut size wheels; or the best nonheating brakes that never go off the job.

You really needed to find out why it wouldn't exceed 60 mph before you ever started playing with it. It should have been able to hit 80 or better. If it wouldn't, you are throwing performance modifications at a serious underlying problem. In short, wasting your time.

What does it do when it peaks out ? If its not crapping out, but just laboring hard, I'd be looking at timing,....either ignition or valve.

Or test the compression. If valves are leaking, or if ring are worn, it will be low on "expression" Wink and therefore short on horse power, therefore low top end.

a stocker will do 88mph,.. according to mag tests...

You seem to have suped it down... Huh...

If you have good compression,... look into jetting, maybe giving it too much of a good thing...

Wrong CDI box or ignition sensor? the 4 speeds and 5 speed boxes are not interchangable. Maybe the cam is off by one tooth? A bad coil? just throwing out some ideas. With the mods you have you should see the ton with ease.

there are 12 discs on the trapp. the cdi box is original to the bike, if there was something wrong with it, would that cause it? when you hit 55mph it seems to just hit a wall, if you give it more gas it will go a little faster but it gets way louder.

as far as the previous problem, i was told the valves were bad, so they were replaced at the same time as the upgrades.

I think we've heard this before.
Check the cam timing, easy to get wrong.
With a stretched chain, the timing needs to lag a little bit.
In other words, with the TDC marks on the crank aligned, on the tension side of the chain, the cam timing is above horizontal.

What do you mean by louder? You say if you give it more gas it will go a little faster but it gets way louder. Are you saying that it seems to be reving more rpms but just no more speed?

4th gear hits the wall. its hard to explain, but i dont think it revs more rpms, it just feels like it could go faster but when you give it gas the engine noise gets louder, the throttle feels like its plenty open.

clutch slip? I did similar mods to yours with the addition of an overbore and wiseco psiton and i'll be darned if my clutch didnt slip something fierce. The better i had it jetted the more it'd slip. Still isnt jetted just right but I bought a barnett kit off ebay and it definately stopped slipping. Im shifting into second at 30-35 now as opposed to 20-25 before and with corect jetting i imagine a 1st gear redline of 45-50, maybe higher.

On second thought...Im still betting on jetting. Gotta check that plug...over and over and over and over again 'til you get it.
