valve clearance check
06/30/10 at 13:21:06

hi. as i mentioned in a different thread my wife just bought an '04 Savage with 20k km (12k miles) on it and there was at least half a dozen owners prior to her. I suspect none of them done the valve check, there is no maintenance records for the bike, so I assume the worst. I figure it has to be done before any more serious is put on it. How long does the job take? 3-4 hours? Thanks?

P.S. I downloaded a PDF version of the Service Manual and quickly "flipped" thru the pages. It talks about adjusting some cable of a sort BEFORE doing the valves - is that really necessary and if yes does it add a lot of time?

If your bike is starting okay,... adjusting the decompression lever isn't really necessary...
Valve adjustment is pretty easy,... I figure a 1 to 1 1/2 hour job, taking it easy....
first time may be a little longer...  You do have to remove the seat and tank...
Gas tank is tricky with the stock petcock... wiggle, wiggle...

any way to check clearance with the tank on? adjust would probably be impossible, but just to stick the feelers in?

It's hard to get a good angle, but you might be able to do it.. you just have to pop off the chrome engine covers and then the valve inspection plates.  Also, just about as important as doing the valves is doing the head bolts(retorquing).. This will help prevent ugly oil leaks around the head gasket.. Of course as long as it's topped off with oil the leak won't effect performance, but will be ugly.. some people have also had problems with stretching cam chain and over extended tensioner so you can rip apart the engine and check the tensioner too.

20,000 miles, never torqued a head bolt, no leaks up there.
Save the hassle, pull the tank,.
