Fuel Leak on top of engine - Need some help
06/30/10 at 08:30:37
I have a fuel leak.
My savage sat for about 1 year. I cleaned the carberator (in place) and got it started. I could NOT use the choke. Everytime I did the engine died.
Then I saw fuel leaking on top of the engine. I discovered fuel in the airfilter case also. When I shut off the pet thingy, the leak stops. When I open it the leak starts again, engine off or on.
I pulled the tank assuming the petcock was leaking. It is not.
Now I am at a loss.
If i put on the fueltank I cant see the location of the leal. Without the fuel, surprise, no leak.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

To get on fuel
on top of the engine
, fuel must be coming from the tank OR the petcock itself OR a fuel or a vacuum line.
First step is to identify where the fuel is coming from. Fill your gas tank up and put your existing petcock on "Prime" so the fuel can flow and then you can see where it is drooling from.
If it is coming from a petcock related leak or from the vacuum line, then consider replacing the petcock with a Raptor.
Raptor petcocks are becoming quite popular around here as trouble free replacements
for the entire vacuum actuated petcock system
as it REMOVES an entire family of starting, stalling and poor performance issues from the motorcycle. They simply can't happen any more.

Here is a thread that makes testing the existing petcock for failure modes perfectly clear and easy to understand.

Do what Verslagen sez in this very next reply -- he's likely hit the nail on the head

Most likely the float valve is stuck, rap onthe carb with a screwdriver handle.
fuel leak is thru the vent lines.
