Wiseco has pistons that also fit early 90's DR650s. Thier website info is wrong and they have the LS650 listed under dirtbikes (i think) but the piston works and its a hi-comp piston at that. You have to go at least 1mm over as they only have 95, 96, and 97mms and 97 is the largest you can put in there before the sleeve gets too thin. Some members have been concerned about weight difference between the stock and wiseco pistons creating more vibration but I find it a lot more smooth. It also revs up much quicker. Gotta use hi grade gas though.

Gotta get the cylinder bored and honed by a local machine shop unless you can do it yourself but other than that yea. Just make sure you use the rings, piston pin, and pin clips that come with it.

Be sure that the machine shop you use for the bore/hone is experienced with motorcycle engines
I recommend that you have a silicone carbide treatment done to the cylinder when bored.  It is well worth the little bit of money.
It reduces friction & heat and adds to cylinder longevity.
With the treatment there is no breakin period required for the engine when reassembled.

I use Boretech for my engine work
bore, hone & silicone carbide treatment is only about $165

Immediate break-in
Improved ring seal
Superior oil retention
Less friction provides lower temperatures
Leaner fuel mixtures possible
Excellent wear characteristics
Anti-siezure properties

BurnPgh,Lancer
thanks for the great info, was very well put together
i did find the Piston kit on the weisco page, and it was under with the DR650, i would never of thought to look there,

i see no one make a kit with a Nikasil big bore cylinder, i quess that would have been to easy,

i really do appreciate the quick and detailed response

Not many places do the nikasel thing. Used to be a place here in PA called Lukes Racing but they stopped doing it. I just got a standard bore and hone for $55. Other than Lukes the only place I know that does it is boretech.

Anyone got any numbers on the performance(HP/TQ) and displacement(CCs) that dropping a 97mm piston into your savage can do?

694 cc represents about a 6.5% increase over the basic 652 cc. Stroke stays the same, so rpm limits stay about the same. Torque is generally about proportional to displacement; horsepower is the product of torque and (unchanged) speed. Thus I would expect about 6.5% increase in torque and power. If compression increases due to different piston configuration, torque should increase a little more. The tradeoff is the need for premium fuel. If there is no change in the head or the valves, the larger displacement might result in slightly decreased high-rpm breathing efficiency, which may reduce the torque gain, but it might possibly give a little better bottom-end torque.

If I were seriously contemplating such a change, I would want to make a series of careful measurements, specifically including a dyno run, before I started. I would then want to repeat the measurements after the modifications, to see whether I had actually gained anything. Without real before-and-after measurements, you will never really know whether you did anything.

Mine, with fully loaded sidecar, for a camping trip used to top Snoqualmie Pass at 59 MPH at the slowest point.
With the 96mm piston and Port polish and relieving of valve pockets, Jetted up two sizes, stock muffler, would top the same pass with the same load at 65 MPH.
A signifigant improvement, I think.

The worst part of the whole deal is the motor want last very long.

Why do you think that ?

What part or parts will fail and why ?

Only if you dont use klots to oil the parts before reassembly. Grin
