rear tire size
06/22/10 at 16:56:53

can someone please point to the information on tire sizes for Savage, rear tire specifically? I know it's somewhere around on the forum but just don't seem to be able to find it. Thanks!

P.S. If you could also tell me which ones are a good choice and where to get them online that would be much appreciated.

Most people replace with 140 90 15  The Route 66 pirelli is the top rated tire,Dennis Kirk has them.

I prefer to run a 130/80 or 130/90.

Right now I'm using a Cheng Shin 140/90/15. It works, has been on there for 10 years, and is just as lousy now as the day it was put on. You should thank whatever deity you believe in that Cheng Shin and Maxxis are out of the street tire game.

The stock rear for an 800 Intruder is a great tire. 140/90/15 Dunlop Qualifier. Lisa's stock rear lasted 15K miles. Local stealership was closing them out a couple months ago for $38 or so. Picked up the last 2 they had. Retail runs from $119-210 depending on how big a rip off your local shop is.

You won't go wrong with Dunlop 404s, Metzeler, Pirelli, Continental. If you can find an Avon small enough they are okay, but very soft, don't last long.

Avoid IRC, Cheng Shin, Maxxis, Duro. Garbage.

If the salesman tries to sell you a Carlisle or Arco with zig-zag tread, shoot him. Some shops still have them in the back room. They quit making them in the early to mid 1980s.

If your thumbnail won't make an impression in the tread the tire is too old to be installed.

Yes, you will need to remove the tall bolt heads in your fender and put something like round headed carriage bolts in, or get rid of all of your stuff that is mounted to the rear fender.

so it's just fender clearance, the swing-arm and belt would be clear?

without running outside to check,I think mine is running 150/90,I bought new rear shocks to bring up the ride height and to clear the bolts under the guard, and yes,the tyre (no you stupid spell check, this is how we spell tyre down under,so I'm not changing it) comes very close to sway arm and belt, takes a bit to get it all aligned.Mine is a little off center, but  doesn't effect the way it rides or handles. I feel a little ballsier giving it a lot of sauce on a round about exit as it handles so well and can feel the tyre digging in giving ton's of grip  Cool

either the Dunlop K555 or any 130/90 will fit without mods, I went with the K555 140/80
