mine backfires constantly upon decel and during shifting. i usually ride solo but a few weeks ago my cousin and i and 5 bikes altogether rode to laconia. they were following me and remarked on when it backfires about a foot and a half of flames come shooting out the pipe

I do like the "pow" on shut down when I'm at work- the acoustics of the parking deck makes it sound like a Howitzer. I've only seen one guy hit the deck so far
Best post ever, hahah!
As for mine, decels and the puff on shutdown. Doesn't really bother me, I figure it'll help to get the attention of people in cars who are going to want to claim that they 'didn't see me'.

I bought my 2008 S40 with 77 miles on it. The previous owner won it in an auction. It backfired on decel from day one. I returned it to the dealer who drilled out the mixture screw cover and adjusted the screw. I picked it up and it still backed fired, so it started turning the screw out CCW in small amounts until I had turned one full turn. Now it still occasionally back fires on decel and only poof when turned off. Did I turn this screw the right way and can I turn this screw out some more?

You made it richer... CCW...
You need to know how far out you are...
Turn it CW,... counting rotations as you go, 'till it seats... don't crank it tight...
Then return to original position... You shouldn't go more than 3 full turns out, or there is a danger of the screw falling out...
( it's an expensive screw...)...

Backfire on decel most often is caused by loose header bolts or leaky muffler clamp, at least with a stock muff.
that's the correct fix for the shutdown pow.
I wouldn't go any farther than poof.
as said, count the turns CW until it seats, lightly or it'll get stuck and you'll be up sh!t creek. Should be 3 or less, if greater than, go up a size in the idle mixture jet.

No, leaner, the purpose for turning it CW is to know how many turns out are you and is it safe.
if you are in doubt, read up on it. plenty of definitive posts in the tech section

No, I've fixed it is almost true, once in a great while I'll get a very light pop if I downshift into 2nd or 3rd at to high an rpm, Carb is stock, except pilot screw is out about 2 1/4 and stock type K&N.

its simple if your bike backfires you have an air leak, an exhaust leak or need a larger main jet.

Larger main jet? That's the first I've heard that suggestion. Why is that?

for me changing the pilot jet and screw sorts out the bang on shut down, and the main jet helps with deceleration noise. do you think the pilot helps with this as well?

I love it when it rumbles! I certainly wouldn't want to "fix" it.
AMEN!
I get pops in between gear shifts when Im flying but if I take it easy nothing major, (either way I dig it) I also get the poof when I shut it down and think it sounds pretty sick.

Only backfires everytime I use the killswitch...loud as can be. Kinda embarassing, but i've learned that stalling it, it won't backfire. Any thoughts on that? By the way, mines an 86 with just over 29000 miles
