Basic Maintenance Questions
06/13/10 at 18:51:06

Two questions.

1) Basic Lubrication

Get your mind out of the gutter.

The owner's manual recommends motor oil and grease at 5 locations:
  • Clutch lever holder and clutch cable - motor oil
  • Side stand pivot and spring hook - grease
  • Brake lever holder - grease
  • Throttle cable - motor oil
  • Brake pedal pivot and brake cable - motor oil

I've seen the posts describing different techniques for lubing your throttle and clutch cables. What about the rest of the parts? Do I just slather grease on? Do I need to disassemble the pivots/holders? What about the brake cable?

2) Nuts, Bolts and Other Fasteners

There's 8 locations the Clymer's manual calls out to check the tightness of (page 54). I don't know what all of those terms mean yet, but once I do...can I just throw a torque wrench on them and yank or should I disassemble, clean, re-apply oil/anti-seize/loctite before putting a wrench on them?

Thanks for helping a newbie out.

Maybe you getting too technical ?

I'd do what comes natural, and doubt that would include a torque wrench or any disassembling.

Since the grease needs to be on the inside, take it off , grease it and put it back.  The ones you oil, it is not needed cause it will wick down in.

Without this forum for advice: I'd look up the torque of each fastener, set the wrench, and pull until it clicks.

Since that wasn't correct for re-torquing the cylinder head nuts, I wanted to check on the rest of them.

For the clutch and throttle cables, I'd use Tri-Flow.

For the brake cable, I'd use a waxy chain lube.

For the side stand pivot, I'd take it apart and grease it properly.  Ditto for the brake pedal pivot.

JMHO!
