my first pair of boots i got from sketchers. they lasted me about 9,000 miles wearing them pretty much every day.

i just bought new boots today off of leaterup.com. haven't had a chance to wear them riding yet, but they seem to be good. steel toe and good leather...

the problem with steel toe boots is two fold: 1) you can't feel the shifter as well and 2) they are taller in the toe, so it is harder to get your toe under the shifter.

they do offer a lot better protection, but regular boots are more comfortable to walk around in....

I use a pair of cowboy boots with a good rubber sole. The sole is key. You want to put your feet down when stopped and not have them slide out.

I've got a pair of ten-eye steel-toed Docs (with bouncing soles  Cheesy) I've been using for quite a while. Took me eight years to really break them in.

The inexpensive boots I like are black Response Gear tactical boots, they were only about $20 and very light.  Redwing makes a composite "steel" toe boot called King Toe, that has 44% more room than regular boots.  I've been wearing them every day for the last year.  There's still most of the tread left, and they are the most comfortable boot I've ever had, but they are $165.  It only took a week or so to get used to shifting with them.  IHTH -stratman

I have worn this Harley Davidson boot for about 10 years, so it is my recommendation:

First pair, I bought from Ebay for $35.00.
Second pair I bought new locally, $100+
Third pair I found was the same boot, with one extra lace, making it higher around the ankle.  Thought it would be great for riding, but it was actually too stiff, couldn't bend my ankle easily to get my toe under the shifter.
Fourth pair, went back to 6" height, and back to Ebay $27.

So if you can be patient, Ebay is the way to go!

I also wear them daily, shifting between the 4 pairs, depending on what I'm doing.  Oldest pair to cut grass, dig flower beds, etc...  I even wear the other 3 pair to work.  They are on my feet probably 16+ hours a day, every day!

The newest pair with the best/deepest sole/tread is the pair I ride in.

Anyway, whatever choice you make, just keep in mind the ankle height and the sole.  You want some protectection around your ankle, but not too tight to make shifting difficult.  And soles are important for when you have to stop the bike.  I also like the short heel on this boot for hooking the pegs.

Good luck!

I kept an eye on craigslist and found 2 pair for 60 bucks.
A set of Harley EXO made with gortex, full lace combat boot is what it looks like
other set was a calf high standard biker boots with Velcro on the sides.
both pretty much new, been using them for 8 months now Smiley

CL is a good place to check daily...just search for boots under the motorcycle section .

+1 for Docs .... I've always wore them while riding except mine aren't steel toe I like to have the feeling on the top of my foot for shifting.  You find a more comfortable pair of riding boots IMO including HD boots.

I wear a pair of new old stock Chippewa steel toe 16" high black motorcycle boots. $90. They were sold by Easyriders in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They have top and across the foot straps, no laces to let in water. Ever seen a pair of Nazi Panzer corps officers boots? Same thing.

I won't ride in anything other than steel toed boots.

I use Doc Martens, a nice soft brown leather and no steel toe caps.
