When on Reserve?
06/07/10 at 12:12:05

Mine runs outta gas and has to be switched to Reserve at 1.8 gallons. Is that normal? Screen of the petcork is clean, diaphragm is good and vac hose is new.

How get about 2.2 gallons.  You may have a previous owner that had a tank dent that was only filled with plastic.

Possibly, you are not filling to the rim.  Gasoline pumps will only partially fill the tank.   Need two both hands to open the pump off the tank filler.

depends on how full you fill your tank up.

personally, when i fill up i stay seated on my bike, leaving it upright and then fill it till the gas touches the breather tube (or whatever the 2" or so lip into the tank is called). i usually get 1.8-1.9 gal in there, so you're pretty much spot on with me.

i used to put the bike on the kick stand, but i got lazy and i overfilled too many times.

If I get it full, I can usually get between 95 and 105 miles before I have to use the reserve.  At that point, I can usually get right at 2 gallons into it.

I leave it on the kick stand, and fill till it hits the interior lip that is around 1.5" or 2" down inside.

To keep it easy on myself, since most of my riding is local, I just plan on filling on the even 100 miles (3100, 3200, etc)

I fill mine sitting on the bike, and I fill it to the neck. I went 101 miles until it sputtered. I filled to the neck again, and it showed 1.782 gallons. That was doing about 55mph for half the trip, and about 70mph on the superslab for the other half.

Sounds about right for a stocker.

110 miles on the backroads takes 1.6 gallons to top up. In town takes about... a lot of cussing and some pushing, mine isn't stock.

Too bad an HD King Sportster 3.5 gallon tank is too long for the bike...

Here's some good news. I've got a 4.8gallon tank on my savage. At approximately 3.9 gallons I switch to reserve. This give me another 50 miles before it should go dry. The tank is from a 1981 Suzuki GL750. Need any more information let me know.

Need ANY more imformation you've got on that tank. A lot of people switching stock tanks with different model tanks but I dont recall ever coming across a "how to" with real directions or pics. I've considered sportster tanks, GS tanks, v-star tanks etc. In fact now that Im thinking of it I going to try my buddies CB250 tank on for size since its out of commision at this point.

Here in Phoenix my mileage varies between 85 and 100 miles before having to go on reserve. Gasoline will expand depending on air temps, and additives got to affect mileage as well. "and then there is your riding style" Smiley
