What Motor Oil do you use?
06/05/10 at 09:15:22

I am about to change my oil and thought I would ask...

What oil do you use (Brand and Grade)?
How often do you change?
Your opinion on the oil?

I guess a synthetic diesel oil like Rotella would be "other" on this survey

Whatever is handy when it needs topped off. Mine thinks it is a Matchless, has all the old standard Brit bike leaks.

At change it depends on the season, 15W40 in the late fall through early spring, 20W50 late spring through early fall.

Synthetic oil + my Savage = really bad idea, it usually boils out full synthetic within an hour or two.

I have a bottle of Mobil 20W50 air-cooled V-twin approved oil for top off right now. Semi-synthetic, on sale at O'Reilly auto parts for less than dino juice. Most bike oils now were engineered for liquid cooled engines...

Just to check... Rotella T6 comes in 5w40 only?

On a separate note, there are no issues with using auto oil in motorcycle?  I thought I read that bike gears can have issues...

depends which one, tiefighter. I used probably all oils there are in three bikes so far. Never had a problem with clutch or anything per se. Now... if it says on the bottle "super extra mollecular additive pack to improve..." - well.. there might be problems.

Yes, 5w during the warm up cycle ensures more oil flow to critical parts, faster.

You want to avoid oil with friction modifiers, you don't need a slippery clutch.
Yes, there are quite a few straight cut gears in the tranny, if fact all of them.  But, modern oils are better and more consistent then old spec dino and syn's a class above that.

We are 1986 technology.  Straight automobile dino is just fine.  What matters is change oil every 3,000 miles.

Rotella 15-40. Good stuff and inexpensive.

Whatever you use don't get the stuff with the friction modifiers. The savage clutch slips when this is used.

Also, frequent oil changes are the best, most effective, and cheapest P.M. you can do. I usually change it around every 5000km. By then the bike is also telling it needs to be done.

Just because a S40 is a cheap bike doesn't mean you should use cheap oil.

Yes Verslagen, I know that all us biker types asked Shell to have Rotella syn rated for JASO (because it met and exceeded all the JASO specifications and could be rated thusly) but it primarily is, was and always will be a diesel formulated oil which makes it "other" for this survey.

Remember, it also meets every other "other than two stroke" engine specification in the world, I mean just look at the jug spec listing fer crying out loud.  Is there a spec it misses? (other than energy star which we really don't want)

I think it is "Other" as in simultaneously less expensive and better performing for our particular 1987 vintage designed motorcycle engine than most oils out there.

Not that all the other oils won't work -- I firmly believe all modern non energy star oils will do the job of keeping our stock engine going because it isn't very highly stressed at all in a pure stock configuration.

==============

Now Bill's Klotz oil is definitely "Other" as well because it CAN be used in a two stroke engine -- or in a skeeter fogger style "oil boiling Savage" of which we have more than a few of here on the list.

How is that Klotz working out for you?  Does it still boil away a half quart a month like the other oils or is it sticking around better?

You do realize that if Klotz works out better for you we will have to let Bill claim it to be the "Supreme Savage Oil of all oils" don't you?

I mean, it covers all Savages -- even them heavily customized high mileage oil boiler skeeter foggers.

And it doesn't smoke and it smells good while it does it too ....

I use cheap oil because I'm cheap not because the bikes cheap.  Why would I spend $8 for a quart of oil when a less expensive oil works. I'm sure the expensive oil does all is it says, but the cheaper oil does the job just fine.

The case of klotz awaits the heat.  Smiley
The give it a definite test, I'm continuing RotSynT6 until there's evidence of oil usage.  And I've been keeping my speed down, hard as it maybe, I have to keep it to a half grin for the sake of the Rot.
Besides the darn motorchipies have been watching.  One even shook his finger at me the other day.  dam I was only doing 65 indicated  Roll Eyes lord knows they weren't.
