fuel in the air filter
05/30/10 at 12:13:49

guys, i was doing for second time the oil leak fix (under the cylinder head) and when all said and done ... the bike does not start. i have the battery freshly charged.
i then noticed gas leak from the air filter compartment. it looks like the carb was sending gas into the air filter chamber.
what is happening? is the carb needdle/pin stuck??
what can i do? the bike wont start (i checked the spark plug, it sparks nicely). i have the two months old gas (kept in plastic jugs) ...
any help would be greatly appreciated!
thank you!

2 things usually cause the gas in the airbox problem...

1. bad petcock diaphragm, which leaks into the vac line, then into the intake and fortunate for you, out into the airbox.

or
2. bad or stuck float valve, gas fills the bowl and keeps going.

Now, there's another reason to, and I can't quite explain why it happens.  but it's been seen to happen and not entirely unusual.  in an attempt to start it up, gas will sputter out the carb.

guys, thank you!
problem solved. the vacuum line was the culprit (i knew i had a bad vacuum line so a while back i bought a new tube but stayed with the connection open for these past few weeks ...).
i plugged the vacuum end on the carburetor and run the bike with whatever gas it had. then i hooked up the new vacuum line (from the petcock to the carb) and after a couple of rough tries it finally started.
Wink
great community, thank you again!

I don't think you're finished yet.

bad vac line doesn't cause fuel in the air filter, bad petcock does.

check for gas in that vac line before and after every run for a couple of days.  if you find any, you gotta leak in your diaphragm.

verslagen1, i will check on it for the next few days.

also:
1. do you happen to have a link to some info on how to open/access the diaphragm, should i want to replace it?
2. on the carb i noticed that there are two extra tubes (symmetrically connected to the carb on each side of the air filter intake side); do you guys know what are those for?? they seem to output into the air...

thank you!

certainly...

those hoses are bowl vents, they just go up and get tucked into the frame.
