the 65388-95 is a direct fit.

Couple questions:

Were you able to use both mounting bolts?
What year is your savage?
Clearance to brake cable good?

Thanks

Nice post Tiefighter.  Too much information is better than too little.

I put my 65747-94 on over the weekend.  After 2 years riding with a mac muffler, the dyna pipe sounds as quiet as I remember the stock sounding.  I know it's actually a bit louder, and I'm sure my new neighbors will appreciate the change.

As you might expect, low end response seems improved compared to the effectively open mac muffler.  No crackle/pop on decelerating like the mac liked to do, though a bit of a puff when I turned her off.

I mounted it directly to the header with one bolt.  I had to drill another hole in the frame's mount because the front hole was too close to the entry point for the rail mount.  The exhaust is pointed towards the brake cable a bit, but there is sufficient clearance.  I don't see an adapter pipe being necessary unless the mount doesn't hold for some reason.

Thank you.  Just trying to be helpful to those who are considering a HD muffler.  I agree that it could be mounted without an adapter, but it would mean drilling a hole to use both bolts or just using 1 bolt.

As to the muffler pointing at the brake cable, have you tried loosening the headerpipe and re-aligning?  That worked for me.

Yes, I resealed the head > header joint and had it loose enough to swivel while mounting the muffler.  I'm not too concerned about it pointing towards the brake arm more than before, and I think forcing it to point away without a 3rd pipe piece would compromise the other joints' alignment.  Having good seals to prevent air leaks is more important to me than getting some soot on a piece of shiny.

If I may chime in here, mine is a '96.  I didn't need to drill any holes nor make any adapter or weld anything.  I used both mounting bolts.  the Savage heat shield fit over everything.  Muffler # is: 64941-01.
Good clearance from the brake cable.  This was a simple, easy direct fit and simple work, and has been done by many Savage members on this site and other sites with no issues.  Your description is very helpful but I would advise everyone to attempt the install before spending money on pipe sleeves or adapters, since in the past most members have not needed them.
