Can't Remove Seat Using Just the OEM Tool Kit!
05/21/10 at 18:37:21

Maybe it's because I bought my bike (see signature) used and was perhaps missing the proper tool in the tool kit....but I discovered that I cannot get the seat off using just the tools in the bike's tool kit.

This could be a real show-stopper, as one could blow a fuse while riding the bike and not be able to replace it (you ARE carrying a spare fuse or two on the bike, aren't you?).

Am I missing a tool?  Are you able to get the seat off of your Savage using just the stock tool kit?

You can change the fuses without taking off the tank,You can pull that little rubber thing out enough to get the fuses out.

I don't think you can either...  I swapped the bolts for allen heads and carry the allen wrench...
Factory does supply two spare fuses inside the tool box lid..

The factory tool kit that came with the bike? Man throw that junk out and replace with good metric tools.

I replaced my bolts with ball detent pins.  Just pull them out and push them in.  No tools required! Cheesy

like precher, I moded mine before I found out.
but, the screws in mine had cross recessed, so I could've removed with a screwdriver.

I can sell you a couple of 'locking speed pins' if you like, $10 inc shipping.

just drill thru the existing brackets with a 1/4" drill.  Been using them for a year or 2.

Thanks, all, for your comments and insight.

I decided to make a simple tool to remove the seat bolts that I could fit in the OEM toolkit.

Off to Harbor Freight for some socket caps (I used the middle one for my tool):

Then I rummaged around and found a cheapo 3/8" drive 10mm socket.  Here are the components of the tool I made (the article on the right is the 12mm "socket" from the OEM tool kit):

Here is what everything looks like put together (I use the screwdriver bit from the OEM toolkit as a "T-Handle" for the 12mm socket):

The additional parts (the 3/8" drive socket cap and the 10mm socket) fit easily into the OEM toolkit bag, along with the rest of the tools.

Works for me!

Since it seems like most of the instructions in the Clymer manual start with "Remove the seat as described in chapter..."  I like this idea, although I might use positive locking pins.

I can get the locking version of these pins
they have 1/4" diameter shaft so all you have to do is drill out the threads in the bracket fixed to the seat.
$10 including domestic shipping

Not to take away from Verslagen, but I picked mine up at a hardware type store somewhere, I really don't remember.  If a Lowes type place does not have them, a tractor supply will.  They are 1/4 inch and I had to drill out the tabs on the seat, where the bolts went.

Verslagens are undoubteldy nicer than mine, but they have never come out when I didn't want them to.  I usually put a drop of oil on them when they are out, just to keep them working nice and smooth.

Hope that helps! Smiley

Best way to do the seat and make it easy and quick to get on and off is to replace the 2 bolts and the allen bolt in back, with get good american phillip  screws and do the seat with them.Ace hardware has any size you need.
