Does anybody have a line on a good, comfortable driver backrest that can be easily fitted to the Savage?

Could probably make something up from a bracket attached to the passenger bolt that would come up through the split in the seats that would have a cushion made out of a plate of wood with foam and leather stapled to it.. Dunno of any that are made for the savage specifically..

somethign like this.. I designed in Pro/E

if you have an S40, it would probably need to attach to the side brackets with a few bolts on each side.. in a different design..

http://www.protac.net/index.html  There was one by Protac on my bike when I got it.  Easy to slide on or take of.  Here are a few pics...

and the bracket

It looks like they had to drill an extra hole in the side rail.  Is that correct?  and if so, did it just go through the side rail, or also through the fender?

I think it's designed to attach to one of the existing siderail bolts but the previous owner probably wanted a little more room. I did notice when looking at other savages with protac looked kinda cramped but piglet's looks roomier

I am about half done building my own. Should have pics. up in a few days of it finished.
The pad is a headrest from a black Toyota car I've reshaped the crome rods and have cut brackets something like the ones on babbyhogs.  I still need to drill, weld & paint them. Mine will bolt to both siderail bolts and allow the crome headrest rods to slide in or be removed.

Give me a few days to do the pics and I will right up the details. So far I have $15 and about two hrs. work in it. I found many headrest will work. It's best to find one with about 7-1/2" to 8" between the rods to clear the seat and line up with the siderails.

Thanks Babyhog, that and a set of forward controls from Ed L and I should be able to ride more than an hour and a half without my back hurting. One too many falls on this spine.

Got me thinking about a backrest.  How about this Idea - if you have a stock sissy bar and fender rails.  Made this bracket out of
light metal just to see how it would work.  I think it will be OK.  Won't work with the pillion seat though - seat is too wide.

As you can see looking at the other side, the sissy bar is slightly narrower than the fender rails.  But with the brackets made
of heavier metal (I have some 3/16" thick steel that will do) the bolts will pull it into alignment.  Have to play with
bolt locations to get custom fit.  Also will need longer fender rail bolts.  Sorry Tanker it doesn't fold.

The backrests look nice. Bigzuk: I don't recall seeing those hard bags last year at TOD 09. Are they winter upgrades?

If you wanna fabricate something, there are plenty of pads out there.  Found these 2 on ebay quickly, with some hardware, if you want to build some kind of bracket to mount to the bike.

I'm not sure about sizes, but I bet the sellers could measure them.  I can measure mine if it helps anyone.  I love mine!  Tried riding without it when I got my seat redone, but I missed it!   Wink

This one is at 99 cents... but closing soon...

Heres another one, but I couldn't get the pic to show. Also 99 cents for now.

Everybody's ideas and fabrication looks great so far!    Smiley

Huh You must have found a different one?  The 2 I posted above, the first ended at $10.49 + shipping, and the second is still open, no bids, at 99 cents....

That is for those of us that didn't find one on the bike when we got it. Wink
