Could probably tune it with unequal length pipes to make it sound like a V-twin. Probably hurts performance splitting pipe makes flow more turbulent and less free flowing.

Looks right to me. Looks like mine.. I've got a 2002 savage. One thing that might be throwing off your perception is that the tool case cover is usually chrome he painted it black I think.. But the trans/crank case is the exact shape and the exhaust fallows the same line until it splits off.
