Is this bad???
05/10/10 at 10:58:28

there are brackets holding the tank to the frame, its broken off

then theres this valve on the carb with no hose on it

Im new and had lots of questions already, sorry if its annoying anyone! I bought this 86 savage for $700 and im just hoping i didnt get ripped off. It seems to run ok (im waiting on a big crank battery though) and under the engine is dirty as hell. Then i find these little things wrong with it. Thanks in advance

That hose nipple is a vent tube,.. it should have a hose on it, running up to the frame above the carb, there's a matching one on the other side... it connects to nothing but it is important...
Just make sure the hose end is higher than the carb...

As far as the tank mount,.. you are going to have to secure your tank somehow, but if the tank don't leak, you can use a strap or whatever,... or get that tab welded back on...

Get yourself a can of engine cleaner and go to it.

most likely you'll find it leaks oil.  I think I would charged him a C note just to clean it.  If he didn't want to clean, either he didn't care or was hiding something.

Broken bracket on tank, I'd pick up a used tank depending on how well that one looks.  Otherwise you need some way of securing the back of the tank.

missing hose on carb, that's a vent, usually a stiff length of hose that sticks up into the frame above the carb, identical one on the other side.

So I can probably get that missing hose on Bike bandit huh. The tank is perfect except for the missing bracket and some faded paint. I was planning on painting it anyway. I guess I'll have to search eBay for a new tank. This sucks though! Did I get a bad deal?

This Ebay seller usually has lots of Savage parts.  Have never heard anyone say anything bad about them, and they are pretty reasonably priced...  me thinks...
http://motors.shop.ebay.com/pinwall_cycle_parts/m.html?_nkw=ls650&_sacat=&_od...

They have 5 tanks listed right now. $19.95-$39.95

If the bike is running even halfway decent, $700 sounds like a deal to me.  With a little help from the folks here, you can do alot of the fixing up yourself on the cheap.  Don't be discouraged.

The hose you can get at any hardware store for very little money. The bracket doesnt necessarily need to be welded but that would be best. If you're going to repaint anyway when you sand the tank sand the section underneath where the bracket goes and liberally apply a good epoxy or fiberglass resin mix. Dont get the 5 minute stuff. Get the strongest ated one you can. JB would probably work too. All can be found at the same hardware stoe you get the hose at.

you can use common vac hose but you might have to tie it inplace.

bad deal? 700 ain't bad, but you got some work to do to make it a great deal.

I'd like to epoxy it or weld it but I do t have the bracket. At $20, maybe I'll buy one of those tanks, thanks for that eBay link!!!

The few times I ran it before the battery died, it ran and started up just fine

I was looking at the other side of the carb and that same valve thing has a hose attatched to it that just hangs down aimed at the ground. Is that what it's supposed to looke like?

The miles are marked at 19,420

Those tubes have to go up....   They must be higher than the top of the carb at the ends.... stick them up along the frame, under the tank, attached to nothing...

You should be ok using a garden hose. I use a nozzle with multiple settings and have it set on mist, haven't messed anything up yet.

Just let it sit and dry for a while before you try to start it after rinsing it, just in case you get some electronic components wet. Other wise I don't think there is a problem.

As long as all the electrical connections are tight and sealed, shouldn't be a problem. I have rode in some pretty hard down pours without any problems.
