From Pegged to Spiked
05/09/10 at 07:37:36

I was home alone the other night, drinking beer, watching some thing on TV about trains. So I started thinking...

I had been carting around a few rail road spikes for nearly a decade and decided I needed a better way to carrying them around than in a box with other miscellaneous items I've collected over the years...

Sand them up, primered, & then painted them with some engine epoxy...

I cut the actual spike off flat and aligned the bolt hole so the flat end butts up against the bracket, holding them in the proper position.
Very simple and actually quite comfortable under the Doc Martin's. And d@mn cool looking, in my opinion.  Wink

Yep, they're both stock sizes, front and rear. I think the fender mods help sell the illusion that they're bigger.

Okey dokey  Grin

Took this yesterday after my first real ride of the year:

Here's a good shot of the seat...

I made a plate to go under the front of the seat pan- spans the frame and uses the four springs left over from the clutch rebuild I did last year. The seat itself is hinged from the rear. It's a lot more comfortable than it looks.

And the speedo just because...

There's a small neon/LED bulb between the leather and the sheet metal with a small hole to let the illumination through. Lights it up right nice at night.

Could you grab a close-up shot of the seat flipped up?  I'm really interested in how you mounted it.  Very cool looking bike!

Nice.  I actually saw a pair of pegs on Ebay that were made from railroad spikes.  He somehow twisted the spike, just once in the center.  They sold for like $23.

Heres a set for almost $50, so look what you saved!  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHROME-RAILROAD-SPIKE-FOOT-PEG-HARLEY-_W0QQcmd...

These are highway pegs, but the ones that I first saw.  I like 'em.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/highway-pegs-american-railroad-spikes-_W0QQcmd...

Yours look great!

Ask and ye shall receive  Wink

Main view of the seat:

The whole thing hinges towrds the rear...

I cannibalized another solo seat for the bracket...

The plate and four clutch springs...

From the back side. A threaded rod goes through the frame and the bracket.
As you can probably tell, I chopped about 4 or 5 inches off the frame.
I flattened out the stock seat mounting tabs and used those to mount the rear turn signals...

The bolts holding the cushion and leather on the top fit right into the springs...

Three years of trial and error...

Thanks! I've been carting them around for over a decade- I think I got them when I used to be a news photog- did some story on the railroads and the guy just handed 'em to me. My girl bought me a drill press last Christmas and I finally found a use for them!
