The high idle was masking the problem.  When I set the idle lower she dies on flat ground from high rpm to rapid deceleration.  There is no smoke or pop just a drop in rpm.  With the idle set higher I can see the rpm dip unhappily low under rapid deceleration with the clutch in.  Is this a carb issue?  All help is appreciated.

Try on PRI. Same thing was happening to me. After decel, it would just die. Turned out the membrane in petcock had a small leak. I run it on prime for now.

I'm going to make a guess here that it is carburetor related. But it isn't a failure, as such. The idle jet fuel feed is at the front of the float bowl. On rapid deceleration the fuel sloshes toward the front of the bowl and makes the idle mixture go too rich. The rich mix causes the engine to stumble and maybe die. Decelerating and braking down a hill would make it worse. The engine can't quit turning until you squeeze the clutch, so it seems as if squeezing the clutch causes the engine to die. Once stopped the fuel becomes "level" again, so the engine will start right up.

Dasch, I am running a raptor petcock so i don't think that is the issue.

Charon, That sounds reasonable to me. Any idea how I stop it from doing that?  I am a fairly new rider could it be something in my breaking technique?

how far out is your idle mix screw? Might need to do a little idle circuit tuning. Messing with the mix screw should do. If its tuned right the engine should return to idle fairly smoothly even on rapid decel.

AHA! (oops, missed your reply till now)
I know the answer, the mysterious air shutoff valve.
That little doohickie (triangle shaped diaphragm next to the idle mixture screw) is supposed to do something when the throttle is cut durring high vac conditions.
Start with a thourogh cleaning and inspection.
There's also been a discussion about shortining the spring to reduce backfire.

I adjusted the mixture screw this morning and the idle seems more stable on rapid deceleration.  I have not hit a hill yet but I think it may have been that simple.

Thanks to everyone that posted.  This forum is one of the best parts about owning a savage.  Well...   that and having a kick ass bike. Cool
