Broken break part
05/07/10 at 18:45:31

I finally got to changing the tire. Found the anti rotation thinge on the break shoe holder to be cracked.  Can this be welded? If its alIuminum. Got a real good wellding dude here where I work who is a Master at welding aluminum.
If I need to get another,  saw a lot on eBay and need to know if I could put a 2002 or a 2005 or a 1986 or whatever.

Thanks Undecided

It "could" be welded, however... there are a lot of small channels running through the back of the stay-plate.  Depending on where it's cracked, it could be a difficult weld.

I would order a new one, either new, or ebay it!

In the mean time, throw a stainless hose clamp over the stay-plate and swing arm just to make sure it stays where it's supposed to.  Go easy on the rear brake!

The welder said that he would fill in the back of the rib to make it solid!

That should work just fine!  I would feel comfortable with that if it was my bike.

Pour it up solid with epoxy -- about $10 worth of epoxy to do the job up right with a strong metallic filled epoxy material.

This has proven to be durable to me even using an extender plate which multiplies the torque on the OEM part.

Mine is drilled and tapped to Swiss cheese, not cracked.  But the poured epoxy makes the entire rib unit a nice solid piece again.
