Only able to fill 1.7 gal of Gas in my 2007 S40
05/07/10 at 11:01:06

Can anyone shed light on why my 2007 S40 will only take 1.7Gal of gas before the pump stops?

I saw on another site that, when pumping gas, I need to hold the ring of the pump so the nozzle is not in the tank and gas will still pump.  Does this sound right?

My bike is two years old and when I bought it had only 800 miles.  Could gas sitting in the tank for long time cause issues?

A bike tank is so shallow that if you try to just stick the pump nozzle in like you would a car it will shut off before you get the tank properly filled. Remember, a car/truck tank has a filler pipe that leads to the tank itself, a bike don't. So you will have to hold the nozzle up a bit to get the proper amount of fuel.

Letting a bike sit for a long extended amount of time with fuel in the tank and carb can cause varnishing which can cause jets to clog. But flushing the tank and cleaning the carb can fix that issue as well as replacing the spark plug.

I slip the nozzle in, holding it to the front. I can feel the bottom of the tube below the cap that way. I hold the bike vertical, sitting on it. I keep an eye on how much is in it. Its slow, but hey, beats gettin hosed! Stop when gas gets to the bottom of the tube or risk it belching under the cap. I also wiggle the bike a bit b4 I put the cap on.Why> Hekk, I dunno, I just DO, okay???

Being somewhat of an efficiency seeker ( allright, Im just anal, okay?) I would, rather than look at it from a empty/full perspective, look at it from an efficiency point of view.

You sir have exactly twice the amount of tank you really need for that gas youre carrying.

See? No more psychological questions when one adopts that approach..

Too small riding with other guys/bikes. I fill up about every 100 miles. The other guys I have ridden with, with larger tanks, still have about 1/2 tank. We all stop so i can fill up instead of riding!

Carry a gallon of gas. Top off your bike on the side of the road. Let them roll on easy & you can catch em in the curvy parts.. When they need gas, you all hit the pumps, you fill up your extra gallon & the tank, Repeat as needed.

I still remember back in the 60's, I was just a kid in the club, and rode w/ some Sporties,.....XLCH's that had what they called a "peanut tank"?
It had to be smaller than ours,......I think. And I remember those hogs only got a little over 40 MPG. And I remember on long poker runs they had to hit stations long before us Honda riders did. And they didn't do 1/2 as much snibbling as I've heard here about too small a tank. Now, they really has something to snibble about !   Undecided   Grin
