removing handlebar grips
05/04/10 at 09:01:00

I feel a little silly asking a simple question like this, but with the fake chrome bits of plastic on the stock handlebar grips, I can not figure out how to get the old ones off so I can put on something nicer. Do I just rip and break the old ones, or is there a better way? Also, are the bars standard 1 inch diameter?

thanks,

Paul

Yes, the bars are 1 inch and if I recall correctly the stock end caps are just glued on at the factory. However my memory is a bit fuzzy about that.

The chrome cap thingy at the end will pull off.
Then just blow them off.

With compressed air, not explosives if you intend to reuse them.

Yes, the caps will pop off, just be careful.  IIRC, the grips were glued and we ran a small thin screwdriver (or pick, or something) under the rubber, ran it around the bar, and was able to slide the grip off.  Not sure what we glued it back on the new bars with.  I think I resealed the cap with some silicone.  Memory is foggy on all that, but my one point, the thing I remember, is be careful how much you put on the throttle-side end cap, if you are gonna reinstall them.  I may have used a touch too much, some squished out and got on the throttle grip.  Not good!  Because the cap doesn't rotate when the throttle does.  I got it cleaned up, and never had a problem....  Until a couple days ago, I was accelerating quicker than normal for me, a little more throttle than I usually use, went to shift, squeezed the clutch, let off the throttle and it stayed revved up!!  I can only attribute it to my carelessness putting that cap back on.  It hasn't happened again.  Hopefully won't happen again.

When I take mine (see signature) off, I just twist and pull.

I used to use white rain hair spray. Use a screwdriver, or whAtever to pry up one end, spray some white rain in and it'll get really slick, to put the new grips on , spray a bit in the grip, initially it acts as a lube, but then it dries and acts like a glue.
Does anyone know where to get a replacement end cap? One of mine fell off...
