Quick Jet Changing Question
05/01/10 at 06:05:49
I just got back from work & am going to change the main on the wifes bike to try to stop the backfiring. Picked up the jet already, a 142.5 I believe it was.
The petcock on her bike doesn't have an off position! I gotta drain the whole tank plus carb to do this? We just filled it up...
Other than that I should be able to do the jetting with the carb in the bike & just remove the float bowl right?
Thanks
S.

Typically, backfiring on the savage is caused by an over lean idle mixture adjustment.
And/or either a loose header or muffler clamp.
Also most go up in size rather than down for improved performance.
When does it backfire?
On shut down? is it a pop or KERPOW?
adjust the mixture screw CCW about an 1/8 turn to a 1/4.
be happy when it's a poof.
During shifts?
check the header bolts and muffler for leaks
a lit candle flame will flicker when near a leak.

the petcock is actuated by engine vacuum... if the engine's not running, no fuel flows... so, you can pull the tank in the on or reserve position,... just
not in prime
... prime bypasses the vacuum control...

The bike is definitely lean! It backfires both on shutdown & while riding when chopping the throttle. I've taken it as far as possible with the adjustment screw.
What is the jet size these bikes come with? I thought the 142 was a step larger? Then go to a 145 if putting a new exhaust on.
Thats great about the petcock, thanks. I'll just drain the carb & be good to go!

1995 and newer US models,.. are #145 main/ #52.5 pilot stock...
Most folks go to at least a #150 main... if you need more than three turns out from closed on the pilot jet idle mix screw, go one up on the pilot, to a #55... (idle mix screw is on the toolbox side of the carb under a brass plug)...

Sharp, due to different years and models, you may take the original jet out first and read for youself what you exactly have in there. The size is etched in very small print around the thick slotted part. Only then buy one size larger. My stock one was 135.

Ah crap. Well I'll pull the one that is in there & see what I am dealing with then.
I was under the impression that all model years were pretty much identical...
I'll post back when I see what she is running.
