Brake Upgrade, Anyone done it???
04/28/10 at 04:27:13

After hopping off of the GSXR the S40's brakes are a bit....underwhelming. Has anyone found a way to mount a bigger rotor and perhaps a better caliper to the stock wheel/ forks? I haven't been able to research alternatives yet so I'm not sure what will interchange. The brakes are adequate, I suppose, so I really don't want to go through the hassle of changing out wheels, forks, ect. A simple upgrade would be nice since I have far too many projects as it is.

Its been done, but, its not a one day deal. I felt the same way, but, I think Ill just adjust my riding to the bike. I dont need it for road racing, its not gonna fade on me & I can chirp the front tire with the brake I have, so, its good enough for a panic stop.
The rear, which locks so quickly & easily, I did modify.

Im using a cbr 954 front rotor and a zx10 caliper.  Front brake ought to be awesome. Rear brake is a trans brake and should be better than stock also.

Oh ya I forgot the point of my post. you could run about any rotor and caliper if you make or have adapters made.  I turned a rotor adapter and machined a caliper adapter for mine.

he desensitized it by cutting back the surface area of the brake shoe.

I was told when I bought the sidecar rig that the front rotor had ben replaced with and ?EBC on long with their red pads and a braided hose. It seems to sop the rig fine from the speeds I run it. If it was on a solo bike I think it would be a big improvement. Max

Mine is a pretty heavy mod in that I am running a 320mm Ducati rotor with a 4 piston PM caliper and braided lines......should stand a 300 lb bike on its nose with 2 fingers.  Oh ya!   Cool

Oh ya and it is not a stock rim/hub either.........

So the stock rear brakes are supposed to be easy to lock up? I guess I need some new brake shoes, my rear brake is weak as hell.

As light as the bike is, it should be easy to lock the rear; I only use it very slightly just for some "perceived balance".

Swantz, the pro racing dude who runs the racing riding schools at Barbers, says he never uses the rear; that it only messes up handling since it may cause a slide, so he avoids the possible rear slide by not using the r. brake.
The dude is a famous long time pro so I thought he may know a thing or two.
In a stop, most of the weight/momentum goes forward to the front brake anyway so that is where the stopping power is.

I spose if a bikes only got a fewounces on the rear because the front is in an almost stoopie kind of bind, then using the rear is kinda silly, but I still use the rear, cuz it slows er down some.

& yea, I got rid of almost 50 % of the surface area on the rear shoes. Itll still lock up easy enough. I bet once that Darkside tire goes on its different.
