Now when you mention above to put in a paperclip, I just want to be sure...do you mean put a paperclip in and leave it in to create an alternate path for the circuit if contact points get soiled in future and put connectors back together, or do you mean put a paperclip in to scrape any crap off of the contact points in the connectors then remove the paperclip and put connectors back together?
paper-clip is there to replace the switch temporarily while you sort out what's up. you're not going to be able to reconnect until you pull out the paper-clip.

Ok. I think i understand now. This is not to fix anything, but to test if the splutter at start up in 1st gear, without any warm up is due to 1 of those 2 connectors
.
Once/if I can establish if either/none of those connectors is the issue then throw away paperclip and reconnect everything as it was before I began.

right process of elimination.
you can and should do one thing at a time.
otherwise when you put it back together you got to go one step at a time.
we don't want to fix what ain't broken.

What Versy said,... is a good test method...
What I did was just,... unplug and replug the connector, several times... the scraping/friction, scrubs the contact, and bingo, that's the fix...
I do this with the tube socket contacts in 40 year old guitar amps, all the time....
... also known as the jiggle it method...

When you unplug and replug those connectors, take a look at both of them and see if any corrosion is visible. Also, when you reconnect them make sure the metal part, whether pin or receptacle, doesn't push out of the connector. During initial assembly the metal part is usually crimped onto the wire, then pushed into the plastic holder. They are supposed to "latch" into the plastic, but once in a while they don't.

Eschew obfuscation.
