Sticking while shifting?
04/21/10 at 20:34:58

Hi first real question on here .... Well here it goes,
I have an 89' Savage with 21,000 Km's on it and since I purchased it a year ago quite often its hard to shift from neutral to 1st. and from 1st. to 2nd.  , Its really annoying and kind of embarrassing when it sounds like I'm just crappy at shifting but its not my fault .... What can I do to fix this?  other than that issue my bike runs amazing and I love it !!!  I used to ride only sport bikes mainly gixxer 750's but I don't know what it is about this bike but its just fun.  Thanks in advance for any input given.

Savages Rule !! Cool

betcha it shifts easy down.

take the pinch bolt out of the shift lever next to the case.
note where it is on the splines and which way to shift down
carefully pull the lever out and off
shift it over one or two splines in the direction of shifting down
push it back on
put the pinch bolt back on
and give it a test
if it's harder then you went the wrong way, not my fault   Grin

I had this problem and that's the way I went I think, been a year.   Shocked

But it could be your fault !
I know what fixes mine is when shifting, keeping foot pressure on the shift lever untill the clutch is fully engaged,.....especially on the upshifts.

I'll definitely give that a try .... I hope it fixes it .... Sometimes especially when shifting at lower rpm's into 2nd I have to pop up on it a couple times to get it past neutral .... I'm glad you said adjusting the shift lever helped I was thinking that it was a clutch issue.

I'll let you know how it worked out tomorrow after I adjust it.
Thanks for the tips guys.

Should actually shift up,.. just fine even without any clutch at all... so, I'd rule out clutch problems...

... check that the lever to shaft, shift rod isn't bent...
