bike making "chirping" sound
04/21/10 at 15:48:01

okay, I know this might sound a little ridiculous, but I let my friend borrow my bike for a month or two, and when I went to get it back, it's making kind of a high-pitched metallic "chirping" or pinging sound.  I started her up the other day and walked around the bike to try to hear where the sound was coming from.  It sounds like it's coming from the muffler.  What does that mean--that it's coming from the engine?

Because I figured I wouldn't be able to describe the sound very well, I made a recording.  The quality is terrible, but you can hear the high-pitched chirping sound if you listen closely.  The sound of the engine changes as I move the recorder various places around the bike:

chirp.mp3

Any ideas?  The bike seems to be running fine as far as I can tell, but it's gonna become my only means of transportation for a while so I wanna make sure it's running well.  It's got less than 3000 miles on it, and it's a '96.

I had a petcock problem for a while and I think some fuel may have leaked into the engine, but it was a small amount so I just figured it'd burn off.  I left oil with my friend and showed him how to check it while he had it as well.

sounds like a lawnmower.. it's hard to make out any kind of high pitch chirp.  you could be hearing the valves clicking if the exhaust is leak at the header connection this could have happened if the exhaust was knocked or the bike was layed down on the exhaust.  you'd need a new crush washer or maybe you could try tightening it down more.  could try tightening at header and at the slipon joint.

valves could need adjustment.

my bike "chirps" when I first start it after a night of sitting.  Guessing it's the valves.  After the oil gets moved around it doesn't chirp.  Prolly need to adjust the valves too (2000 miles and not been adjusted), but I'm not confident on my ability on that yet...

I am wondering if you have developed a hole in the muffler baffle, rusted out or something, and now it causes the whistle.  It has had a few years to collect condensation.
Skat just had her baffle blow out completely, maybe this is just not as severe..

check around for loose hardware, pulley or belt covers.
speedo is capable of making a lot of different sounds too.

I know you said muffler, but I had a devil of a time locating my chirp.  It moved depending on which way I cocked my head.  Turned out it was the speedo rattling, instructions for the repair of which are abundant on this site.  My headlight pulled the same stunt later.  It's easy enough to test those two...  Just hold your hand firmly on one and then the other.  If the noise stops, you can fix it with nine cents worth of silicone, instead of two hundred dollars worth of tailpipe.

Best of luck.

if understood right this chirp happens sitting still at idle - guess could be a loose something or other and a routine tighting up of everything you see might fix -

so it go away when you're ride?
