broken shift linkage
04/21/10 at 15:06:53

Well i was riding home from Philly to Allentown on I-76 in rush hour not fun to begin with.  Tried to down shift and my linkage snapped in two.  Had to limp up the off ramp and blew the clutch in doing so seeing as i was stuck in 5th gear.  My loving wife drove down to pick me up.  So i am stuck in a cage until the dealer can get her purring again!!!

Gonna need more than a 10mm to get the clutch, but the $$$ for the tools is a lot less than the $$$ for the labor. & having the tools means the next job you need to do will save even more.

Yes I have a 10mm wrench but i do not have the time to change out the clutch.  in addition i wanted to get the state inspection done.  and i wanted them to just do a general look over on the bike.  i am putting on 120 miles a day and don't want something to happen like this any time soon!!!!

Yup, they break allright!

My "under-rod" once broke; fixed and reforced mine
(w/2nd paralell rod) with a thin SOLDERING ROD,
a pair of jumper cables and a large 12v battery
(ford f350 truck), has held well for over 3 years.

Good golly, how hard do you have to "STOMP" on them to break them ?
Otherwise how long is mine going to last w/ a FC 6 inch extention added to it ? It seemed to be perdy rigid when I did it.
Where exactly do they break ? Is it the long horizontal link, or the ball arm ends ?

These "Shifter Broke" threads, where it is said there was no abuse, make me spand a minute or 2 once in a while having a look at mine. Its oil change time, IUll give it a look when it gets oil.

By the way it is a 1997 savage and has 12500 miles on it.  I did not stomp it that hard and it broke in the middle.  I have the tools and the Clymer just not the time to do it.

Well if they break, it means they are flexing a bit, and fatigue will set in over that many miles and years. Must not be a common problem or it would have been improved by now ?.....or should have been.
It is unusual for a link that is a straight push-pull to be flexing,......if it was perfectly straight in the first place.
My 6 inch extension is made from 5/16 solid round bar, so would be the last thing to break I would think.
