Gas blowing out header when I try to start it
04/17/10 at 15:40:54

I have been restoring a 1987 savage all winter. I tried starting it today. It is blowing gas out the header. I suspect it is the float in the carb. Any idea will be appreciated.

Never!

Now that we know a lot more than the original post...

I suspect the float as well, he had several problems, and never found out directly what caused the "gas blowing out the intake" problem.  He did go thru his carb, found a broken part, got another, had same problem, adjusted his valves, found a loose wire, got it running, no longer to be seen till the next problem.

if your carb has a drain nipple we can attach a clear tube to, we can check the float height.  stick a clear tube on the drain, hold it up along the carb, open drain valve, see how high the gas goes, petcock to prime, how high does it go?  should come up to the bowl gasket.  If it doesn't then you need to adjust the float height.  if it does and keeps going, you need a new float valve.

Mine does not have a drain nipple. Just a screw on the bottom. You say I should nit block off my two vent carb. lines when using the Raptor petcock? It is getting late so I will Adjust the Float tomorrow.

sure sounds float related - could be the level, the cut off needle or it's seat - look at the tip very close if theres a wear ring toss it, shake the float and be sure it is empty a sinking float is not good

I don't know what he has in the kit
