Last of the big singles?
03/21/10 at 23:49:44
I was talking to my friend about the Suzuki Savage and how great single cylinders are, and he asked if there were any other big singles that are available new in the US. Now that the Buell Blast is gone, I couldn't think of any. Are there any street singles over 250cc? Just wondering.

Only DP and European exotic, as far as I know...
Kawasaki KLR650,...Suzi 400 Motard,...Husaberg, Husqvarna, MZ 650 Mastiff, Muz 500, and the Royal Enfield 500 of India...
But,... mass produced, major manufacturer,.. the Savage is unique...
That's why it's the only bike for me...

And of all those I think only the Savage and the Royal Enfield are air cooled.

Both the Savage/S40 and the Royal Enfield are considered to be rather low-performance machines, too.
When I looked for mine, there were the KLR650 (one of which I bought), the S40, and a BMW with a 650 Rotax single. The KLR650 considerably outperforms the S40, but it was too tall for me to ride comfortably. It also has shim-under-bucket valve adjustments requiring the cams to be removed for valve adjustments. On the other hand, it has a gas tank claimed to hold over six gallons of gas.

Hmm.. so as far as air-cooled big singles available in the US, the S40/Savage is the only one? Crazy. But cool.
