replace o-ring?

I will be doing the head plug replacement next weekend. I have read all the stuff in the tech section and feel very confident. My question is should I replace the o-ring in there, if so does anyone know if it has a part number. also any other tips or suggestion of things i should do while i have the head cover off(besides re-torquing head bolts and replacing spark plug)?

Reply #7 - 03/14/10 at 09:04:04 You are sealing the entire area with silicone gasket maker -- replacing the "O" ring is not required as it is undamaged when you peel the factory sealant off of it, and it is undamaged when you put it back with all the new goop. Save the money and the time -- you can reuse it.

Reply #8 - 03/14/10 at 10:06:36 The reason for this O-ring is to prevent goop from sealing off a vital oil port. Any damage to this part, nicks, flattening, etc. I'd replace it cause... "do I want to do this again for some 2bit part?"

You are correct that all it accomplishes is to keep the goop out of the port area until the goop gells up good -- the goop does all the sealing and leak preventing.

So what if it had a little nick? A microdrop of goop goes over the top of the ring and makes a little silicone hemorrhoid in the protected void area?

Its not like we don't directly extrude a bead edge of goop into the cam journal area that we intentionally let set up good so it doesn't go anywhere when we crank the engine over ....

Reply #10 - 03/14/10 at 12:49:53 i had to order the plug anyways so i just included the o-ring with it. i'm not exactly sure what you mean by putting the gasket maker over the oring. is this something that will be obvious to me once i get in there? i couldn't tell by the stuff in the tech section.

This is too late to help the OP, I know, but here are the parts I replace whenever I'm taking the head cover off:

Oblong o-ring: 11178-24B00

2 X valve cover cap o-rings: 09280-60004

Camshaft end cap: 09241-30008

5 X washer gaskets: 09168-06023

The washer gaskets go under bolts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 13 in the pic below:

Incidentally, the above pic shows the torque order I used on the 14 head cover bolts.

All of the parts I listed above should be pretty cheap (nothing over $3.00, except for the camshaft end cap - which can probably be reused in most cases).
