Prime function
03/12/10 at 17:22:12

I just started my bike for the first time in 4 months. I put it on choke to start but it took quite a few tries before it started . Is this a situation where I should have put the petcock on prime? Thanks.

yes, when sitting for a long time it's likely to be dry or at least low.
put it on prime to get it filled right away.

Do you use the choke the same way when you use the prime, then how long do you let it run on prime,or do you not start it with the prime function? Thanks

I turn prime off when the bike is started or when ever I remember.

choke depends on the bike.  current bike doesn't like choke to start even on these cold (40°) mornings.  one click out to warm up though.

Just to clarify a touch,....there is no difference tween prime, run, or reserve, as far as the running of the bike.

Run = gas will flow from the tank only when the engine is being cranked and/or running, but will drain the tank only down to the reserve amount

Prime = gas will flow from tank and have gravity pressure to the carb all the time, but will drain the tank only down to the reserve amount ??

Reserve = gas will flow till the tank is completely empty as long as the engine is being cranked or running

ps: Did I say that right I hope ?  Shocked

On edit,.....I stand corrected,
"prime" will drain the tank dry

Actually from what I understand Prime will drain past reserve. I am not certain on this but I believe it has been posted before about that issue.

Use Prime setting to drain your tank....

When the bike has been sitting more than a week,
or to drain the tank to work on the bike,
or when you have done carb work and need to refill the float bowls...
That's it...

Prime & reserve use the same inlet in the tank. Run has a taller pickup, so, it runs out of gas while thers still some in the tank. The difference between prime & reserve is that reserve is running thru the vac operated part of the petcock. Prime delivers fuel to the carb, even if the engine isnt running.

So should you use prime while the bike is off then switch it to run before you start the bike, or start it on prime,or is it effective both ways?

Either one is fine. You only need to use prime if the bikes been sitting long enough that you wonder if fuel had evaportaed out of the bowl. Prime, well, it Primes the carb.
