Exhaust leak
03/11/10 at 09:51:36

I think I still have an exhaust leak from when we installed my Dyna muffler.  BESIDES any EPA implications, what effect will it have on the bike itself?  And what's the best way to seal it now?

Backfire city... Huh

best fix,... pull it, cut some extra slots in it to allow more compression from the clamp...

cut the slots like this,... with a hacksaw...

BTW,.. I found these great muffler clamps at a Dollar store, in a pack of two... one fits the muffler perfectly, and they are super sturdy...

those exhaust clamps are great. put some exhaust paste round the header connection. slide the muffler on to it. bolt the exhaust together and then tighten the exhaust clamp. some paste should squeeze out of it. when it gets hot the paste expands and hardens to form a solid gas tight seal.  Smiley

Thanks guys, but that means I have to take it apart again....  aaarrrrrgggghhhhhh

And actually, it doesn't backfire that badly.  Of course, I'm a pretty conservative rider, but still....

We used an extension piece to move the muffler back a little.  I can't remember if the leak is on the front end of the extension or the muffler/extension connection.  Not sure about another clamp, but I'll see if another would fit in there.  We didn't use any paste, and probably should have.
